How to Get Rid of Dandruff?

Anti-dandruff shampoos containing the antimicrobials selenium sulphide or zinc pyrithione are helpful for mild dandruff. These are active against the fungus Pityrosporum ovale and are widely available.

Antifungal shampoo containing ketoconazole provides a mild, yet effective treatment for dandruff, particularly more persistant or severe dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is also active against Pityrosporum ovale.

Ketoconazole shampoo can now be bought from retail outlets such as supermarkets, as well as from pharmacies. It should be used twice weekly for two to four weeks to clear the dandruff and then needs to be used regularly every one to two weeks to prevent dandruff coming back

You should see your GP if your dandruff persists despite treatment or gets more severe, or if the scaling also affects other parts of the body, as this may be due to other skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. Your GP may then refer you to a dermatologist or skin specialist.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Most dandruff is caused by a disorder of the oil-secreting glands known as seborrhea. Read on for various steps you can take to reduce or eliminate this embarrassing condition.

Steps:

  1. Mix 8 tbsp. peanut oil with the juice of half a lemon. Rub the mixture into your hair, leave on for 10 minutes and then wash as usual.
  2. Add 3 drops of tea tree oil, a natural antiseptic, to a small amount of shampoo and then wash your hair.
  3. Rinse your hair with a solution of 1/4 c. vinegar and 1 qt. water.
  4. Use an infusion of the herbs chaparral or thyme as a hair rinse.
  5. Add flaxseed oil, primrose oil or fish oil to your diet.
  6. Use kelp as a seasoning.
  7. Take selenium, vitamin B complex, vitamin E and zinc supplements. Do not exceed 100mg of zinc a day.
  8. Take vitamin C and a bioflavonoid complex.
  9. Add lecithin granules or capsules to your diet.
  10. Make at least 50 percent of your diet raw food.
  11. Avoid or decrease your intake of fried foods, dairy products, sugar, chocolate and nuts.

post by Tynika Toolsie from Trinidad and Tobago at September 8, 2009
i don't think i could avoid step 11 but i will and its quite through that it can't be eliminated but only controlled. There were a few people whom i know that had and said it left after trying step 10.I really hope it works on my hair but i don't have it bad so i think it will be quick for my scalp to become healthy again since i went to recent salon and thry used a hughly scented shampoo and some other moisterizers.(Hope it works, i will try steps 2,10 and 11)
